Hoop Mountain 16U Finals Recap

The sixteen-and-under division came down to two high profile teams in the New England Playaz and Team Frenji in the finals. At the heart of the match-up was the individual battle between Aaron Falzon and Frenji’s mountain of a man, Chima Azuonwu. Falzon utilized his skill and mobility to set the tone, not just going to work on the perimeter but even showing a wide arsenal of post moves to score over, and around, the six-foot-ten Azuonwu on the block.

Hoop Mountain Invtl 16U Recap

Mansfield, MA – The Hoop Mountain Invitational kicked into full gear on Saturday with college coaches covering the courts throughout both Mass Premier courts and Mansfield Sportsplex. Here’s a look at some of the guys who stood out:

Matt Staubi, 2014, Team Frenji – Staubi controlled the pace of the game. He showed almost unlimited range on his pull up jumper and distributed the ball to his teammates in transition with great efficiency. Staubi’s basketball IQ is far beyond his years.

Chima Azuonwu, 2014, Team Frenji – The raw big man again showed great potential on Saturday with a barrage of thunderous dunks and impressive out of area rebounds. Azuonwu’s combination of size at 6’10″ and athleticism is a rare commodity.

Providence Jamfest Recap 16U
30Apr

Team Frenji's 3 & 1 performance resulted in a semi-final appearance in the gold bracket. Team Frenji lost to the eventual champion RI Hawks. Team Frenji started the tournament with a 59 - 50 win over Mass Evolution building a 19 poin lead at the halftime. Point guard Matt Staubi led the team in assist while scoring 24 points. Walter King 12 points complimented his excellent defense. Kevin Degnan, Chima Azuowu and Josh Riger controlled the boards. Chima and Josh scored 7 & 6 points respectively while Coby Lefkowitz contributed 4 points. Jordan Gregory, Chris Jordan and Paul Emdin contributed key minutes in the victory.

Team Frenji advanced to face Mass Rivals, one of the elite programs in Massachusetts with Team Frenji winning 59 - 47.  Kevin Degnan scored 12 points and his reverse "alley oop" dunk on the team's 1st play set the tone for the game and was impressive enough for HOOP GROUP to tweet about it.  Matt Staubi controlled the pace of the game and distributed the ball while scoring 21 points.  Chima Azuowu was a force down low blocking close to 10 shots while scoring 6 points.  Walter King scored 10 points while creating many fast break opportunities with his defense.  Paul Emdim's 1st half performance was key in the Frenji's win.

Team Frenji's quarterfinal opponent was a Mass Bearcat team who had earlier beaten the BC Eagles.  Team Frenji came out strong early and maintained a double digit lead virtually throughout the entire game.  The 68 - 54 win was fueled by an impressive 1st half performance by Keven Degnan who ended up with 26 points.  Matt Staubi handled any attempts at pressure from the Bobcats and had 22 points from a combination of " floaters" and 3 point shots off the dribble. Walter king's impressive 3 point shooting resulted in 11 key points while playing outstanding defense.  Chima Azuowu, Coby Lefkowitz and Josh Riger's rebounding intensity did not allow the bearcats to close the lead below 12.  Paul Emdin's contribution to help control the game were evident throughout the 2nd half.  Jordan Gregory and Chris Jordan's guard play were outstanding, helping Frenji advance to the semi-finals.

Despite Kevin Degnan's 13 pts while Paul Emdin, Chima Azuowu, Matt Staubi each contributed 8 pts in Team Frenji lost to eventual champion RI Hawks.  Team Frenji's play didn't go unnoticed an here is what the New England Recruiter Report had to say about some of our players:

Kevin Degnan '14 - Team Frenji / Versatile long-armed 6'7 wing who plays high IQ ball and scores the rock from all over the floor.  Possesses a sweet shooting-stroke: knocking them down indiscriminately from both the mid and long-range.  Attacks from the wing with the one-dribble frive and finishes with either hand at the rack or he'll attack the rim for a dunk-shot when it's there.  One of the most impressive 16u performers of the weekend.

Matt Staubi '14 - Team Frenji / Floor general with a right handle and a clever change-of-pace game off the bounce.  Gets into the lane and goes to work with a series of floaters and leaders.  Knock-down 3-point shooter, sees the floor well and does a nice job of advancing the ball up the floor with the pass in transition.

Chima Azuoma '14 - Team Frenji / Behemoth 6'10+ wide body competes hard at both ends and plays with force (physical) in the lane.  Comparatively new to the game and in the very beginning stages of his development, Chima with his physical tools and hard-working attitude, should improve steadily as 2012 moves along.
